How Drops Are Determined
- Treasure Classes: Each monster is assigned a Treasure Class (TC), defining
its pool of potential drops. Higher-level monsters are assigned better TCs, which contain
more valuable items.
- Drop Chances: The game first checks whether a monster will drop any items
at all. While special monsters like bosses guarantee drops, regular monsters may drop
nothing.
- Drop Rolls: Once a drop is triggered, the game rolls on the TC to determine
the item. Monsters with multiple drop rolls perform this process independently for each
roll.
Item Quality
After determining the item type, the game decides its quality (e.g., Normal, Magic, Rare, Set, or
Unique). Several factors influence this:
- Base Chances: Each quality level has a base probability. For example,
Normal items are more likely to drop than Magic or Rare items.
- Unique and Set Availability: Items can only drop as Unique or Set if those
versions exist for the item type in the game's database.
- Magic Find: Magic Find increases the chances of finding higher-quality
items, particularly Magic, Rare, Set, and Unique items. However, its effect diminishes as
the item quality increases.
Number of Players
The number of players in the game affects drop rates and item quantity:
- Monster Drops: Increasing the player count improves the chance that a
monster drops an item instead of nothing. This effect is capped at 8 players.
- No-Quest Monsters: For non-quest-related monsters, the improved drop rates
make it more likely to get additional drops.
- Solo Player Commands: Using the `/players X` command in single-player games
simulates higher player counts, improving drop rates.
Magic Find (MF)
Magic Find is a stat that increases the chances of finding higher-quality items. However, it does
not affect the chance of an item dropping, only its quality:
- Effect on Magic Items: Magic Find significantly increases the chances of
Magic items dropping.
- Effect on Rare, Set, and Unique Items: Magic Find provides diminishing
returns for Rare, Set, and Unique items, meaning higher Magic Find yields smaller
incremental benefits for these item types.
- Breakpoints: Because of diminishing returns, it's important to balance
Magic Find with kill speed to optimize farming efficiency.
Terror Zones
Terror Zones dynamically scale monster levels to match or exceed the highest-level player in the
game. This unlocks higher-level Treasure Classes, enabling drops that were previously
unavailable in the area. For example:
- Regular monsters in Terror Zones can drop higher-level items, matching the new monster
level.
- Baal's minions in a Terror Zone can drop items comparable to the highest-level bosses.
How DropCalc Helps
DropCalc mirrors the game's item drop logic by simulating Treasure Classes, probabilities, and
effects like Magic Find and Terror Zones. Here's how it works:
- Input variables like monster type, Magic Find, and player count.
- Simulate drops to see probabilities for each item quality and type.
- Optimize farming by calculating your odds for specific items or sets of items.
